Cobb has become one of the benchmark names for cool-climate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and the 2021 Old Firs Block is one of the most impressive wines in the cellar with 2021 being an outstanding top vintage. Winemaker Ross Cobb learned his craft at Williams Selyem under the legendary Burt Williams, working as viticulturist and enologist before going on to Flowers and Hirsch, and that connection runs particularly deep with Coastlands vineyard, as Williams Selyem began purchasing fruit from the Cobb family's vineyard here in the early 1990s. Old Firs is one of the original blocks planted at Coastlands in 1989, named for two enormous Douglas fir trees on the property, with old Martini clones 13 and 15 alongside Wädenswil 2A planted at roughly 1,150 feet just three miles from the Pacific. Constant wind and fog create an exceptionally long, cool growing season, producing tiny yields and Pinot Noir with tremendous concentration while retaining remarkable freshness. The 2021 was made with 40% whole clusters and shows pomegranate, red cherry, and kirsch layered with rose petal, lavender, tea leaves, pine, spice, and crushed stone, with firm, chalky tannins and driving acidity giving the wine remarkable energy and length. This is a serious, age-worthy expression of true Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, combining California fruit with the restraint, perfume and vineyard transparency we associate with great Burgundy. The palate is gorgeous, and the floral notes, both violets and rose petals, are redolent. A gravelly minerality frames the tart cranberry relish and wild alpine blueberries.
