2025 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

2025 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin is one of Chablis's great historic estates, with nearly four centuries of family history, and Benoît represents the family's thirteenth generation of winemakers. The domaine now farms 26 hectares, including nine Premier Crus and five Grands Crus, and Montée de Tonnerre is one of the cellar's most important wines. Situated immediately beside the Grand Cru hill, Montée de Tonnerre has long been considered one of the most Grand Cru-like of the Chablis Premier Crus, combining impressive depth with the appellation's unmistakable mineral drive. Droin owns 1.76 hectares here, with vines averaging around 50 years old, planted in shallow Kimmeridgian limestone and marl filled with fossilized oyster shells, along with veins of blue clay that contribute additional depth and minerality. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and barrel, followed by full malolactic fermentation and roughly eight to ten months of élevage before bottling. The 2025 vintage was an early one in Burgundy, with harvest beginning in parts of the region as early as August 18, but the fruit arrived in excellent condition, and the resulting wines show a particularly attractive combination of generosity, elegance, and freshness. That combination should suit Montée de Tonnerre especially well, giving Droin's naturally powerful expression plenty of fruit and texture while retaining the saline, oyster-shell and flinty character that makes this vineyard so compelling. It's a beautiful expression of the vineyard and an outstanding effort from Droin!

Vinous (Neal Martin) 93-95 points! "The 2025 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has one of the most tightly-coiled aromatics amongst Droin's flotilla of Premier Crus, which I suspect bodes well in terms of ageing, because there is palpable energy here. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, bright and tensile, quite nuanced in terms of spiciness, with a hint of grilled walnut on the weighty, concentrated finish. This lingers in the mouth and tingles with residual pepperiness. Superb. (Drink between 2027-2049)"
