These are our last bottles of this sensational 2008 late release, just in time for the new score from James Suckling, and more big scores are sure to follow. The Champagnes from Pierre Moncuit are exceptional as one of the favorite addresses among our clients and ourselves. Located in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Pierre Moncuit has been making Champagnes for over a century. While Pierre is no longer with us, his daughter, Nicole Moncuit, and his granddaughter, Valérie, carry the torch of this superb Champagne house. Nicole was one of the first and still is one of the few female winemakers in Champagne, inspiring her daughter and hopefully other young women to take on the profession. The Champagnes are essentially styled after Nicole's interpretation of the vintage and don't follow any strict guidelines. To her, it is all about the Terroir, the Grape, the vintage, and their interplay, which requires immense skill and expertise. Every vintage has the possibility of being treated differently, and it's always exciting to see through Nicole's eyes by enjoying her Champagnes.
While we offer the Champagnes from Pierre Moncuit every year, we rarely ever get to offer the Houses' top Champagne, Cuvee Nicole Moncuit VV. The Cuvee Nicole is the pinnacle of expression from Moncuit and Nicole's ultimate view of the vintage, made from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from the prestigious vineyard Les Chetillons, the oldest vines of the property at over 90 years old. While most producers are on more recent vintages, 2008 was just released this month from Moncuit and is going to be the best example of this cuvee ever. Nicole ages this Champagne for much longer than her other bottlings to build incredible complexity, and it is the most limited Champagne that Moncuit produces. This is a very nuanced and detailed Champagne that keeps emerging with something new every time you revisit the glass, and it's genuinely one of the most excellent examples that Nicole has ever made, finished with a low 3g/l dosage. This is an outstanding bottle from this top vintage and one of the best buys for 2008 Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.
