Mount Eden is one of California's best and oldest estates. Their Chardonnay is legendary and can age for decades. Over a decade ago, they purchased the Cinnabar estate, which was situated directly below them. That estate became the backbone for the Domaine Eden wines. The vines here are over forty years old and grow on decomposed Franciscan shale, which is well-drained but promotes low vigor in the vineyard. The topsoil is very shallow and infertile, which further stresses the vines, resulting in yields and very concentrated, age-worthy wines. A substantial amount of Mount Edens Estate Chardonnay barrels has also been added to this wine, further enhancing its quality. This is akin to a white Burgundy from California, with its incredible minerality, cool yellow fruits, lovely balance, and a wealth of dry extract on the long, lingering finish. Mount Eden Chardonnay holds its own against the more expensive village wines from Burgundy, doing so at a fraction of the price, making it an incredible and highly recommended buy for Chardonnay. It's a great holiday wine, too!
Jeb Dunnuck 94 pts! Made from a mix of 60% Domaine Eden and 40% Mount Eden fruit, the 2021 Chardonnay is always a sophisticated wine that overdelivers on its price point, with fresh floral aromatics leading to a medium-bodied mid-palate of beautifully oaked pear and hazelnut layered in juicy acidity. Ready to drink now, it should age equally well, from now through 2031 at least.<!--more-->Modeled after Mount Eden since 2007, this is a mountain estate that was once home to Cinnabar Winery, planted long ago to Mount Eden clonal selections of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The goal of the wines is to be drinkable earlier and more fruit forward than the Mount Eden wines, though winemaking is similar. (Drink between 2025 - 2031)
Vinous (Billy Norris) 93 pts! Coming from a plot at 1,600 feet in elevation, the 2021 Chardonnay also includes about 25% declassified fruit from the Mount Eden estate. Spice-laden and taut, a super-enlivening core of vibrant acidity and white pepper bitterness here conveys seriousness. Nuances of tangerine peel, spearmint, crushed rocks and clove emerge on both nose and palate, coasting through the driven, precise finish. Well done. (Drink between 2024 - 2032)
