2022 Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles

$25.99
2022 Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles
This is only the third time we have had access to these wines from this under-the-radar Beaujolais address. Domaine de la Grosse Pierre is a small, family-owned winery located in the heart of the Beaujolais region in France and has been in the hands of the same family for three generations. They are producing exceptional wines that reflect the region's unique terroir with a total of 14 hectares of vineyards, situated in some of the best areas of the Beaujolais region, including the villages of Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, and Régnié. The vineyards are farmed sustainably with organic practices, and the grapes are hand-harvested to ensure the highest quality.
This is a Beaujolais of incredible purity from the Chiroubles Lieu Dit of "La Grosse Pierre" the namesake of the domaine, located in the middle of Beaujolais between Morgon and Fleurie. It is one of the smallest crus in Beaujolais but also one of the highest elevation crus at 1,500 feet, featuring domaine vines that are 50+ years old. As a result, there is a bigger temperature difference here than in any other site in Beaujolais, and because it gets colder at night, it extends the growing season and imparts a lovely freshness and elegance to these wines. It is always fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled with no SO2, which allows for a more juicy and ultra-pure expression of Beaujolais, much like the no-sulfur bottling of Lapierre's Morgon. This is a stunning example this vintage, and at this friendly pricing, one of the best buys for 2022 Beaujolais.

John Gilman 94 pts! "The 2022 Chiroubles “la Grosse Pierre” from Pauline Passot is another superb young wine from this outstanding vintage. The bouquet is pure, precise and deep, wafting from the glass in a complex blend of red and black cherries, pomegranate, pigeon, woodsmoke, stony soil tones, fresh thyme and a floral topnote of peonies and rose petals. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely structured out of the blocks, with a sappy core of perfectly ripe fruit, great backend mineral drive and grip, buried tannins and impeccable balance on the long and complex finish. This is a great young wine in the making, but it has a proper foundation of tannin and deserves some time in the cellar to blossom."
