1973 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Cuvée Aimé Cazes

$169.99
1973 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Cuvée Aimé Cazes

Rivesaltes is from the Languedoc-Roussillon, home to some of the world's best-kept wine secrets. Producers like Cazes have a tremendous collection of library wines that they release in small batches every year, some as far back as the 30s! This more coastal-influenced climate features the Grenache Blanc varietal in one of its most legendary forms. The wines made by Cazes are some of the most indestructible, age-worthy masterpieces in wine. These wines stand up to the most exceptional dessert wines, rubbing shoulders with Sauternes Y'quem or some of the best trockenbeerenauslese from the Mosel, and are akin to fantastic old Madeira with its more versatile pairings. These are incredible wines, and some might remember some of the other sensational wines we have offered from Languedoc-Roussillon, like the '59 Maury that was a huge success. This too plays to that same tune and is an exceptional deal for a wine of this much age and is one of the wines of the vintage where it can be hard to find a great bottle in '73, making it a fantastic birth year selection. It's mind-bogglingly complex, and right now, we have the only bottles available in the USA.

Wine Advocate (Jeb Dunnuck) 95 points! "Bottled in 1993, the 1973 VDN Rivesaltes Aime Cazes is distinctly darker in color, with more chocolate, coffee bean, toffee and sweet spice characteristics on both the nose and palate. It has thrilling sweetness, an incredible texture and blockbuster length. I had a fantastic, larger tasting with Lionel Lavail of Domaine Cazes, who is the director of all of the estate properties. We went through a number of the Domaine Cazes properties, and finished with an incredible lineup of older Rivesaltes. With regards to the dry reds and whites, they offer an impressive lineup, and excel at the value price points. The sweet wines were some of the most memorable of my trip through the region. We finished the tasting with two aged Muscats, both of which were bottled young and then aged in bottle."
