Roederers brut vintage continues to be a fantastic bottle from one of Champagne's most recognized houses and rubs shoulders with Cristal at a fraction of the price. The vintage Brut is a consistently great cuvée, and though we don't talk much about the 2014 vintage in Champagne, this is a stunning example of what it looks like in the right hands. Roederer's vintage brut is a beautiful showing of Pinot Noir from Verzy in the Montagne de Reims, sourcing from plots that face northeast, a bit of an against-the-grain exposure, but allows the Pinot Noir here to ripen slowly and build complexity through hang time on the vine. The blend is supplemented by 30% Chardonnay, bringing vivacity and lift to the Pinot's power and structure. After fermentation, 30% of the blend is aged in oak before bottling, with more aging on the lees for at least four years. Indeed, an incredible creation by Roederer's Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, who never fails to create exciting and vinous Champagnes. 2014 exhibits grander flavors and riper fruits, yet with incredible finesse and precision, never losing balance. As mentioned, it is only a couple of points behind Cristal at a fraction of the price. 2014 is one of the best vintages of all time for the Brut Vintage, showing the house's expertise and style flawlessly, coming highly recommended for vintage Champagne and should be even more spectacular in magnum, especially since it's been in the bottle for a few years now. We have excellent low pricing on these magnums today, and they are highly recommended!
Wine Advocate (William Kelly) 95 points! "Roederer's 2014 Brut Vintage is beautiful, offering up aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, red berries, warm biscuits and smoke. Full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular, it's seamless and complete, with terrific mid-palate depth and amplitude. Framed by bright acids and enlivened by a pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a penetrating finish. The blend is 70% Pinot Noir, emphasizing Verzy, and pressure is a touch higher than in its more ethereal Blanc de Blancs counterpart. As I wrote of its 2013 predecessor, this is a wine that puts many prestige cuvées to shame."
James Suckling 95 points! "Round and creamy, yet bright and tangy, with delicious pie crust, walnuts, lemons, sourdough, white peaches and apricot stones. More gourmand, with a creamy mousse. Lingering praline and pastry notes. Pinot noir and chardonnay. Drink or hold."
John Gilman 94 points! " The 2014 Louis Roederer Brut Millésime is composed of entirely grand cru fruit, with the cépages this year being seventy-one percent pinot noir (all from the village of Verzy on the Montagne de Reims) and twenty-nine percent chardonnay (from the village of Chouilly in the heart of the Côte des Blancs). Twenty-five percent of the vins clairs were barrel-fermented and aged in cask, and only twenty percent of the blend went through malolactic fermentation this year. The finishing dosage is eight grams per liter. The wine is very refined on the nose, offering up a youthful blend of apple, white peach, chalky minerality (with a touch of Verzy’s steeliness also in evidence), warm bread, just a touch of hazelnut, gentle smokiness and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with bright acids, excellent mid-palate depth and mineral drive, refined mousse and a very long, pure and beautifully balanced finish. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon and his team at Louis Roederer are at the absolute top of their game right now and this is a stunning wine in the making. It is certainly very drinkable today, but I would be inclined to give it a handful of years in the cellar and let its acids relax a bit more and allow the wine really to blossom! (Drink between 2026-2065)"
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points! ") The 2014 Champagne Vintage Estate La Montagne Brut is elegant and detailed, offering notes of currant, orange zest, and mocha. The palate is balanced and focused, revealing a spine of energy without being austere. It is pure with cherry liqueur, tangerine, and stony mouthfeel and offers impeccable balance and refreshment, which makes it deceptively easy-drinking now. However, it will certainly continue to improve for those who have the patience to wait. Drink 2023-2043."
