Courcel's Grand Clos des Épenots is one of the best deals we have had for red burgundy in years is a beautiful Pommard, this time from the estate’s historic walled parcel inside Les Épenots that can be enjoyed now. Sourced from a mid-slope site of iron-tinged red clay over limestone that gives depth and classic Pommard minerality and sense of place. Old vines are hand-picked and vinified with a high proportion of whole clusters, long macerations, and a patient élevage of roughly 18–21 months in French oak with a measured share of new barrels, so the terroir takes the lead. The 2017 season delivered purity and balance, and it shows here as dark cherry and plum, crushed rose, pepper and clove, and the appellation’s signature ferrous note, framed by firm but refined tannins and fresh acidity for a long, savory finish. This can certainly be enjoyed now, yet it will continue to age for many years in the cellar. It's an outstanding deal for the category, closing in on a decade of age, and comes highly recommended!
Decanter 94 points! "This refreshing, approachable wine boasts aromas of blackberry and black cherry with hints of violets, peonies and spice. The texture is supple, and while the wine is still tannic, it is brighter and livelier than the 2018 or the 2016. Although the grapes from the 4.89ha holding on the north side of the village were picked late, the heavier crop load in 2017 gives it a welcome equilibrium. You can open this soon, yet it should hold for some time if you are so inclined. (Drink between 2025-2050)"
