We have an excellent price on Le Pupille's Saffredi today, the estate's flagship Bordeaux blend, created in 1987 by Elisabetta Geppetti from hillside parcels around Pereta at roughly 800–1000 feet planted on rocky limestone-clay with sandstone influences and cooling sea breezes. The 2022 season was warm and dry, so picking was brought forward to lock in acidity and fine tannin ripeness. Saffredi is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot (ratios vary by year, typically 60/30/10). The wine undergoes fermentation in a temperature-controlled steel tank for approximately three weeks. The malolactic fermentation occurred in barrique, followed by élevage for roughly 18–24 months in French oak, most of which was new, and then a period of bottle aging for polish. The profile is precise and layered, featuring a plethora of dark fruits, flowers, wild herbs, spice, and minerals. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, carrying ripe fruit through sleek acidity and fine, powdery tannins into a long, mineral finish. It's an outstanding example of Saffredi and a top buy at this price!

James Suckling 99 points! "This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot."

Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 98 points! "This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal. The wine is nuanced and layered with fine details that recall wild berry, spice, blue flower and blood orange. To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace."

Decanter 98 points! "Menthol-infused dark berry aromas open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely wrought red and black berries and cherries. Wonderful lip-smacking sapidity and finely integrated tannins complete the package. The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends. Elisabetta Geppetti's son, Ettore – in just his third vintage overseeing the winemaking without the experienced hand of ex-consultant Luca d'Attoma – has beautifully interpreted the vintage. He tells me that, unusually, it took the team three harvests at different times to obtain the freshness evident in the wine. It's a stunner. Wow!"

Antonio Galloni 96 points! "The 2022 Saffredi handled the rigors of the growing season quite well. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon make a strong first impression. Deep and potent, with tons of persistence, the 2022 has so much to offer. Gravel, incense, lavender, mocha and dried herbs are some of the many aromas and flavors that open with a bit of coaxing. The 2022 is a very young wine, one that requires at least a few years in bottle, but it is quite captivating just the same. This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot performed admirably"
