Fontodi is one of the great wine producers in Tuscany, and we have their new release of the Flaccianello at this great low pricing today! The Cantina is situated in the town of Panzano, in a valley called 'Conca d'Oro' or the Golden Shell, due to its fertile soil, sun exposure, and amphitheater-like shape. The Fontodi family has been making wine since 1968, but has been in Chianti for centuries, formerly known for its Terracotta production before venturing into wine. The Estate owns 130 hectares of organically farmed land, of which 70 are dedicated to vines. Flaccianello della Pieve is a selection of the Estate's best Sangiovese vines and spends extended time (24 months) aging in oak (Troncais and Allier barrels). 2022 was a challenging vintage due to hail taking out a large portion of the crop. The Cantina had to pivot and slightly change the blend this vintage, sourcing a large portion from a vineyard used for the Flaccianello 25 years ago, giving it a more classic feel and a bit more of an old-school presence, while still maintaining the Flaccianello DNA. Typically, a wine that walks the tightrope between power and finesse, which it does well this vintage, and we have excellent low pricing today of this new iteration from Fontodi!
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 96 points! "Another icon from Tuscany is the Fontodi 2022 Flaccianello della Pieve. This organic wine is beautiful, quite bold and thickly extracted. Across the board, these wines from the 2022 vintage made by Fontodi all show high alcohol and a rather robust character, and the same goes for the Flaccianello, whose alcohol content is 15%. This vintage is more accessible overall, with finely tuned tannins. This wine represents a selection of the best estate fruit at various elevations with both alberese limestone soils and galestro shale. Production is 60,000 bottles."
Antonio Galloni 94 points! "The 2022 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rather quiet wine in this vintage. The vineyard mix is a bit different than in the recent past, as hail damaged one of the three core vineyards Fontodi uses for Flaccianello. Instead, the winery used parcels across the street from the winery that were used for Flaccianello from 1981 to 2000, before they were replanted. Dark Sangiovese fruit, spice, new leather, menthol and incense are nicely laced together. Overall, the 2022 feels a bit lithe. I have seen Flaccianello blossom with time in bottle. That could very well be the case here. Sadly, production is down by 40%."
