2022 Luciano Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore

$39.99
2022 Luciano Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore

Sandrone is one of the key figures of Barolo, with an impressive 50+ vintages under its belt, and the wines have never been better. While their Barolo's La Vigne and Aleste (Cannubi) are their mainstays, they produce a few other noteworthy wines, like the incredible Valmaggiore we are offering today. Valmaggiore is made with Nebbiolo sourced from the hill of Valmaggiore in the town of Vezza d'Alba, which is renowned for growing one of the best examples of Nebbiolo outside of Barolo proper. Valmaggiore is an amphitheater vineyard featuring sandy soil and a unique Microclimate that Luciano and his wife fell in love with in the early 90s. Due to the vineyard shape, the vines receive total exposure to the sun throughout the day, ripening very well and evenly, making it a prosperous and vigorous site. Nebbiolo from this vineyard is classic, exhibiting excellent finesse and elegance with a remarkable amount of refinement, as all aspects of the growing and winemaking processes are devoted to respecting nature. Valmaggiore sees hand harvesting, indigenous yeast fermentation, stainless steel maceration, and malolactic fermentation in 500-liter French Oak Tonneaux. The 2023 is excellent and a fresh, aromatically profound wine, despite the hot summer in Piedmont, which is on par with some Barolos of this vintage. It's a fantastic value from one of the great producers of Barolo, so don't miss these last bottles!

Antonio Galloni 93 pts! The 2022 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is quite the surprise, given the challenging conditions of the year. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, mint, dried flowers, orange peel and cinnamon build effortlessly in the glass. Soft, silky contours wrap it all together in style. This is impeccably done. (Drink between 2026 - 2034)

Jed Dunnuck.com (Audrey Frick) 93 pts!  A vivid but transparent red color, the 2022 Nebbiolo D'Alba Valmaggiore is bright with aromas of candied cranberries, cinnamon, dusty earth, and fresh roses. Coming from a single vineyard in Roero, the wine is medium-bodied and ripe but retains great freshness and vibrancy, with terrific structure and a long, rather notable finish. An impressive entry to the Nebbiolo range, it offers a lot of fresh purity and is surprisingly light on its feet for the vintage. Drink 2024-2034. (Drink between 2024 - 2034)
