2018 Henri Gouges Nuits St George 1er Les Vaucrains

$119.99
2018 Henri Gouges Nuits St George 1er Les Vaucrains

Typically the go-to bottle for those fond of the more classic style of Nuits St. Georges. Gouges Vaucrains in 2018 has an excellent richness, and while a more powerful, it still shows its classic side. The vines here are a mix of newer plantings that are 20 years old and older plantings over 80 years old. Its a great bottle, and after we tasted it, we got the impression that it is not going to be a bottle that needs 20 years to come around like Vaucrains usually does and can be approached relatively early. For those on the fence about buying a burgundy that they need to cellar for a decade or more, this is a good option but still could go that long if desired. This is also about 33% less then Chevillons version of Vaucrains which are neck and neck every vintage. We can't recommend this enough for the Burgundy drinker, and it is one of the top 2018 reds we have tasted.
John Gilman 94 points! "The 2018 Vaucrains chez Gouges is an excellent wine in the making- powerful and loaded with pure fruit and firm tannins, but not as massive as the version crafted at Domaine Chevillon this year. The wine delivers a superb aromatic constellation of dark berries, black cherries, venison, espresso, a great base of minerality, woodsmoke and a lovely topnote of cola. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with ripe, firm, but surprisingly suave tannins, excellent nascent complexity and a very, very long, youthful and promising finish. This will be excellent in due course."
