The 2023 White Walnut Estate Chardonnay is #16 on James Suckling's Top 100 domestic wines and comes from the estate's certified organic and Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyard in the Dundee Hills, a 6.3-acre site on red Jory volcanic soils that Chris Mazepink purchased in 2013, cleared with his sons in 2014, and planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 2015–2016 next to Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit. Winemaking follows a terroir-first approach with native-yeast fermentations and a mix of traditional vessels—concrete, wood, and terracotta—aimed at precision rather than oak imprint. The 2023 season in the Willamette Valley was warm, dry, and largely disease-free, yielding high-quality fruit, and was an especially strong Chardonnay vintage. This wine exhibits a beautiful opulence, yet with excellent restraint and complexity, and is simply a delicious wine at a great price point.
Decanter 98 points! "The home site was planted in 2015 with a field blend of about 12 heirloom and open-pollinated selections, covering about 1ha. The wine features an array of tropical fruits, almonds and toasted nuts – the kaleidoscope in the White Walnut line-up. Ripe fruits: think guava, papaya and juicy Meyer lemon. Intense in its balance, minerality and savoury framing. Wild herbs, spices, freshly cut stone fruits and pear. Deliciously complex and loaded with nuance, yet will still be loved by your hedonist friends."
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points! "Pouring a bright silver/yellow hue, the 2023 Chardonnay White Walnut Vineyard is sourced from a site planted in 2015 with a mix of heirloom and suitcase-selected clones. This wine is stunning. Medium to full-bodied, with layers of grapefruit, flinty minerality, and vibrant citrus, it has a slightly more hedonistic edge, reminiscent of Puligny-Montrachet, and a remarkable saline lift from start to finish. This is top-tier white wine. 285 cases produced. Drink over the next 10-12 years."
