A tiny producer with only three hectares of vines, Cantina del Signore, established in the picturesque region of Gattinara in Piedmont, Italy, is a distinguished winery with a rich history dating back to its foundation. As one of the artisanal producers of Gattinara, owner Stefano Dorelli's grandfather married one of the Nervi's of famous Gattinara descent and the greatest producer in the region. Stefano specializes in producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Gattinara, utilizing traditional winemaking techniques honed over decades. The vineyard's focus is on crafting high-quality Nebbiolo wines, known locally as Spanna, which are celebrated for their complexity, elegance, and aging potential and are some of our favorite examples of Nebiolo, which is influenced by this higher elevation and naturally cooler part of northern Piedmont (Alto Piedmonte). Viticulture here has been sustainable since the beginning, and winemaking is traditional, with long macerations and aging in older casks. These are classic, dense, chewy Nebbioli that show the beautiful savory aromatics and flavors of the Alto Piemonte, dried cherries, wild mountain herbs, licorice, and sandalwood. While drinkable on release, these wines have the structure to reward cellaring in the medium to long term. We have the top wine here today. Borgogfranco Riserva and 2018 are the best examples ever, and while it was a warmer vintage when paired with this cooler climate, it was simply sensational and gave a bit of extra edge to these more elegantly styled wines.
