The 2017 Domaine de Courcel Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is another excellent Pommard that can be enjoyed now from a historic family estate now guided by Yves Confuron, who favors whole clusters, long macerations, and a patient élevage that lets terroir lead. Sourced from old vines in Rugiens Bas on iron-rich red clay over limestone, the wine was hand-picked, fermented with a high proportion of whole clusters, and matured about 18–21 months in French oak with a measured share of new barrels. The 2017 season delivered purity, balance, and yield and was a welcome vintage after the trials of 2016, so expect dark cherry and blackberry, crushed rose, pepper, and clove from the stems, and the site’s signature ferrous mineral line, all framed by firm but polished tannins and fresh acidity. The Courcel style is made for the cellar, and these wines need a decade or more before they can be enjoyed. This one is just starting to turn that corner today, and is great if given time to open up, but it will easily make its way into the 2030s. We have a limited amount at this low pricing today, and it's a fantastic premier cru Burgundy buy at this low pricing with serious potential and almost a decade of age! Don't miss it!
Deacnter (Tim Atkin) 94 points! "Big, bold, ferrous and rich, this is true to the domaine's aim to produce serious, slightly forbidding wines that take a long time to soften in bottle. Blood, iron and a butcher's shop full of guts and fresh meat, this needs a decade but will reward your patience. (Drink between 2027-2035)"
Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 93 points! "Deep red black colour, plenty of fruit weight, livelier than the Epenots. Very good weight all the way through the middle, fresher than Epenots and with a very long finish."
