2017 Château Cos d'Estournel Les Pagodes de Cos

$39.99
2017 Château Cos d'Estournel Les Pagodes de Cos

The 2017 Château Cos d’Estournel Les Pagodes de Cos is a very smart way to access the pedigree of one of Saint-Estèphe’s greatest estates without the pricing of the Grand Vin. Pagodes de Cos has been produced since 1994 and comes from dedicated Cos d’Estournel parcels, with vines averaging around 35 years old for the 2017 release, giving it more seriousness and identity than many second wines. The blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, showing the Cabernet-driven structure of Saint-Estèphe but with enough Merlot to add roundness and early appeal. The 2017 vintage is drinking great now and is more classic than opulent in Bordeaux, and Cos handled it very well, producing a Pagodes that is fresh, silky, energetic, and already approachable. This is a refined, medium-weight Saint-Estèphe with real Cos character, offering Bordeaux charm, excellent estate pedigree, and enough structure to continue developing over the next decade. There are very few Bordeaux's worth buying at this price point, and with almost 10 years of age, this is a fantastic buy at this low price! Don't miss these last bottles!

James Suckling 94 points! "This shows wonderful depth and richness, yet it’s so fresh and vivid with dark berries, dark plums and spice. Full-bodied, balanced and creamy with beautiful flavors and structure. So many spices in this. Only 12% alcohol. Second wine of Château Cos-d’Estournel. Better after 2022."

Antonio Galloni 92 points! "The 2017 Les Pagodes de Cos is dark, supple and wonderfully inviting. Dark plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and earthy tones give the Pagodes a decidedly somber, dark feel. Plush fruit and ripe, silky tannins add to the wine's sensual, inviting personality. (Drink between 2020-2030)"

Wine Advocate (Lisa Perotti Brown) 92 points! "A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, this second wine accounts for about 55% of production. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Les Pagodes de Cos sashays out of the glass with youthful, presumptuous notes of Black Forest cake, raspberry preserves, cassis and spice cake with nuances of lavender, chocolate box, anise and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has wonderful elegance and precision, with a very finely grained frame and seamless freshness supporting the soft-spoken red and black fruits, finishing with a quiet intensity."
