We have an excellent Chianti buy today via the 2018 Le Filigare Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "Lorenzo". This 100% Sangiovese, sourced from southwest-facing, high-altitude parcels at an elevation of 1,600 feet in Barberino Tavarnelle, is rooted in schistous, clay-calcareous soils and farmed organically. Fermented with an unmarked, more traditional approach, it's matured 30 months in larger 300–500 liter French oak casks, preserving tension and purity while meeting Gran Selezione's estate-grown and extended-aging requirements. The 2018 Chianti Classico harvest yielded fresh, balanced wines after a long, even season, and Lorenzo reflects that poise with red and black cherries, blood orange and rose, hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, and Mediterranean herbs, fine chalk-edged tannins, and a long, sapid finish. It's a fantastic buy for Chianti with a bit of age and a rare find here in the US, rarely imported, and what does make it stateside is usually close to double the price we are asking.
Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 Gold Medal 96 points! "Unforced beauty nourished with roses, chamomile and pure dark cherries and positively beaming with zesty acidity and spicy tannins. Crunchy and enduring with a long finish."
James Suckling 94 points! "Orange peel, tobacco leaves, salted plums, sour cherries and cloves on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm, supple tannins. Layered and delicious with juicy, ripe and sour fruit and lingering spice. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
