We were able to obtain a bit more of the new release of Paul Bara’s 2019 Champagne Grand Cru Spécial Club Rosé after quickly selling out. Long the benchmark and, for years, the only rosé accepted by the Club Trésors, Bara’s Spécial Club Rosé comes entirely from Grand Cru Bouzy fruit, Pinot Noir led with Chardonnay, and colored with a small portion of Bouzy Rouge, so good the estate bottles it on its own. Vines average 40 years old, farming is meticulous, and the cuvée must pass two separate blind tastings to earn its “Club” label, which is why this wine is remarkably consistent. The 2019 delivers wild strawberry, pomegranate, blood orange, rose petal, and crushed chalk, carried by a fine, persistent bead and a long, saline finish after an extended rest on the lees and a moderate Brut dosage. It shows the power and precision of Bouzy Pinot with the elegance many liken to red Burgundy with bubbles, and it has the balance to cruise for the better part of a decade—one of a kind and always a top grower rosé to prioritize grab some before they sell out again!
