2020 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

$39.99
2020 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py
We were able to get a limited amount of this excellent back vintage from Jean Foillard. A brilliant biodynamic farmer like Lapierre and Yvon Metras, Foillard has a more serious style that often reminds us of wines from Burgundy with their intricacy and nuance. These are also very age-worthy wines that can be surprising after a few years in the cellar and are not dominated purely by fruit.
We have the Flagship wine today from Foillard, the Cote du Py, which is consistently one of the wines of the vintage for Beaujolais, and 2020 looks to be a promising vintage with concentrated, complex, and rich wines thanks to a small crop and slightly warmer growing season. Sourced from vines that range from 10 to 90+ years old planted on Schist granite, the Cote du Py sees the traditional whole cluster Beaujolais fermentation with oak aging for 6-9 months. The Cote du Py is the pinnacle of Morgon and one of the greatest Beaujolais made yearly. We like to bury some bottles in the cellar and watch it compete with premier cru Red Burgundies from the same vintage over time, which it is fully capable of doing. We have a great price on this Cote du Py with a bit of age from Foillard, and for fans of Beaujolais, this is a serious example that is always worth grabbing a few, especially at this low pricing!

Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 95 points! "Foillard's 2020 Morgon Côte du Py bursts with aromas of peonies, orange rind, exotic spices and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a rich core of fruit, tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish. Intensely flavored and incisive, at this early stage the 2020 looks to be one of the finest vintages of this cuvée in recent years."

James Suckling 95 points! "Racy wild strawberries and raspberries with white pepper, agave and dried herbs. Fresh, medium-bodied palate with silky, refined tannins spreading evenly across the palate. Juicy and bright finish with lovely, herbal allure. Extremely drinkable now, but will hold, too."
