2020 Domaine Courbis Cornas Les Eygats

$59.99
2020 Domaine Courbis Cornas Les Eygats
The 2020 Les Eygats from Domaine Courbis is one of the best examples of all time, and we have a little bit more available at this fantastic pricing. The wines from this Domaine are scarcely imported to the USA, but they are fantastic expressions of Cornas at very reasonable pricing, rubbing shoulders with some of the best wines of the vintage, especially in 2020. Les Eygats represents some of the best values in France currently for the price-quality and is not a bottle to miss.

Our second offer from Domaine Courbis, this time with a fantastic showing of the Les Eygats, which has the potential to surpass the great 2019s. The vineyards of Courbis have been passed down from father to son here since the 16th century, and today the Domaine is operated by brothers Laurent and Dominique. Driven to produce high-quality wines from their ancestral home of Cornas, the two are combining modern advancements with traditional techniques to coax the most out of their family holdings. While they grow vines and make various Northern Rhone Cuvees, the standouts here are their Cornas bottlings totaling of which they have about 8 hectares spread through different sites. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with plowing by horse used when possible, and one of their top wines this vintage is the Les Eygats which faired slightly better than the more expensive La Sabarotte this vintage. There are only a few other producers that bottle Les Egayts, most notably Ferraton, which we've offered in the past.
Les Eygats is located at a little over 800 feet of elevation and is an extremely steep site like many of the top Cornas vineyards, featuring decomposed granite soils and vines that are 30 years old on average. It is considered an exceptional microclimate by the Domaine and is located at the northern end of the appellation, where it is a bit cooler.
Fruit is harvested by hand and undergoes fermentation in temperature-regulated stainless (one of their modern advancements) with 100% destemmed fruit—Les Eygats ages in about 50% new oak for 18 months before bottling.
Les Eygats is a contender for one of the top Cornas buys of the vintage, and we have low pricing here today on some of the only bottles available in the USA. Jeb Dunnuck has given this one of the highest scores for any Cornas wine this vintage so far, even outscoring Domaine Clape, and at nearly half the price, Les Eygats from Courbis is a not to miss wine this vintage.

Jeb Dunnuck 96-99 points! "From a cooler terroir in the northern part of the appellation, the 2020 Cornas Les Eygats is inky purple and gives up a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated style offering loads of minerality as well as blue fruit, pepper, pen ink, and graphite aromas and flavors. Reminding me of the 2010, this dense, rich, massive Cornas is going to require bottle age, but it’s insanely good."

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 95-97 points! "Dark purple. Vibrant, expansive aromas of spice-accented dark berries, minerals and candied flowers pick up suggestions of olive, vanilla and smoky bacon with air. Sappy and energetic in style, offering intense blackberry, bitter cherry, licorice, black pepper and mocha flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Finishes spicy, youthfully tannic and impressively long, leaving resonating floral and spice notes behind."
