2021 Dönnhoff Roxheimer Höllenpfad Riesling trocken

$39.99
2021 Dönnhoff Roxheimer Höllenpfad Riesling trocken
2021 is another excellent vintage in Germany, and Nahe's leading producer, Donnhoff, succeeded with an incredible array of wines. After a few hot vintages, 2021 is considered a return to classicism, though the growing season wasn't without challenges and required tons of work in the vineyard. A cold winter, a warm, humid summer, and lots of rain at the beginning of fall were just some of the challenges that needed to be faced. Donnhoff was pleased with the outcome calling it a classic vintage, and after the extensive work they put in, the results were worth the effort. Donnhoff explained that the wines in this vintage are delicate and intricate yet carry an incredible density with excellent, elegant acidity and a sleek mineral character.
The dry wines have been the first to be released here, and the Roxheimer Höllenpfad is a fantastic example of drier Riesling from this part of Germany and can be surprisingly age-worthy. Located across the valley from Kahlenberg, the Hollenpfad is a famous, very steep vineyard in the middle section of the Nahe river. The soils here are unique red sandstone that can be seen from a distance. This vineyard site gets much sun in the evening producing tiny berries that are intense with aromatic complexity while elegant with a peppery-spice mineral character unique to this site. The vines here range from 10-40 years old and provide a crisp acidity met by the expressive fruit. An exciting bottle and one of the favorites from Donnhoff, the 2021 Roxheimer Höllenpfad has excellent potential and is not to miss this vintage. We currently have the only bottles available of this one in the USA, but quantity is limited, so act quickly!
James Suckling 94 pts! Wild berries and herbs, plus a splash of blood-orange juice. Wonderful interplay of fine-grained minerality and juicy fruit that’s never loud, the acidity only clearly perceptible at the very long finish that shows mountain-spring freshness. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.
