2017 Telmo Rodríguez Toro Gago

$22.99
2017 Telmo Rodríguez Toro Gago
Toro Gago is a testament to the winemaker Telmo Rodriquez's dedication and passion, renowned for his commitment to quality and innovation, crafting wines that showcase the best of the Toro in Castilla y Léon, the northwest region of Spain characterized by its hot and rugged climate. With years of expertise and a deep understanding of the terroir, these wines truly reflect the unique characteristics of the land and account for some of the best buys from this part of Spain.
Gago is considered the more representative wine of Toro and is sourced from the oldest vines from the best plots that are grown by eight families that have worked with Telmo for many years coming from the villages of Argujillo, Villabuena, and Morales. The grapes used for this wine are Tinta de Toro (the local name for Tempranillo) and Albiño Mayor, a white varietal that is mainly cultivated in Castilla y Léon. The grapes are grown in terraced vineyards on sandy loam and sandstone. Fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in a combination of wooden vats for the red and stainless steel for the white grapes; 80% is aged in foudres and 20% in barrels.
While Telmo Rodríguez is widely celebrated for his prestigious and highly sought-after wines, the Toro Gago offers an exceptional opportunity to experience his craftsmanship at an affordable price point. This accessibility makes it an excellent choice for both seasoned enthusiasts and those venturing into the world of fine wines, and it is one of the great values of Toro.
The wines have a refined rusticity to them, boasting a harmonious blend of ripe dark fruits, such as blackberries and plums, layered with subtle hints of spice and oak influence, and is quite sophisticated at this price point with a wonderful sense of place. This is showing so well right now but has the structure for a few more years in the bottle. This is one of the best values for old world red, and we have low pricing on a few cases arriving next week. While this is a different wine from those of producers like Lopez y Heredia, they both play along to the same tune, and this, too, is an incredible value crafted with old-school principles.

Wine Advocate (Luis Gutierrez) 92 pts! The Toro red 2017 Gago comes from a vintage affected by spring frost that wiped out some vineyards and an end of the season that was very warm and dry and pushed the pH up. The wine is riper than usual, reflecting the conditions of the year. Eighty percent of the wine matured in oak foudre, the rest in barrique, for a period of 14 months. It has the Toro character and rusticity, with a solid palate and abundant, slightly dusty tannins. 23,484 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2018.
