2020 Domaine Faury St. Joseph Vieilles Vignes

$44.99
2020 Domaine Faury St. Joseph Vieilles Vignes
It's been a while since we have been able to offer anything from Faury, but with an exceptional 2020 vintage, we thought we would give the top Old Vine Cuvee here a whirl. These wines always have been very consistent wines that we have been following for years, and 2020 is a spectacular and beautiful vintage from Lionel Faury, ranking among the best here of all time. This Cuvee sees the oldest vines that Faury owns with planting between 1937 and 1976. The grapes are replanted with a massale selection of the prized Serine Syrah variety, which is sought after for the complexity and profound aromatics it provides. The vines here are rooted in Velay granite located in the northwest of Northern Rhone in Le Blanchard. Lionel uses 45-75% whole clusters for fermentation with pump overs and punch downs before racking in 600-liter demi-muids, where it ages for 15-18 months.
This is the sweet spot for Faury, and this is one of his top efforts of all time on the same level as Gonon this vintage at considerably less (2020 Gonon received a 96 from Vinous), making this one of the most exceptional buys of the vintage for the Nothern Rhone. 2020 was a warmer and earlier harvest than usual, but the wines are fresh, aromatic, and elegant, with excellent sophistication and complexity and overall quite classic in profile for a warmer vintage. As mentioned by Josh Raynolds, this is on the level of some Cote-Roties and is such a refined example of St. Joseph and an incredible buy for the category. This is due to arrive next week, and currently, these are the only bottles available in the USA.

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 95 points! "Inky magenta. Intense black and blue fruit, floral botanical herb and spice qualities on the deeply perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Broad and fleshy but lively as well, offering palate-staining boysenberry, kirsch, candied violet, olive paste, chewing tobacco and exotic spice flavors that become livelier with air. Marries richness to energy with a deft hand and finishes with superb, spicy persistence, well-knit tannins and resonating mineral character. I consistently find this bottling to be among the best of this sprawling appellation. In fact, it's usually at or above the quality level of quite a few examples of Côte-Rôtie."
