Rouchier is one of the smallest productions we have ever seen in the Rhone. The Domaine's total vineyard area is only 1.5 hectares, worked solely by husband and wife team Christian and Martine. In the Heart of Saint Joseph, Rouchier produces two 100% Syrah Lieu-dits and Luc, is a .5 hectare parcel planted in 1972 on clay on Schist soils. The vineyard is organic, and like a handful of producers in the Rhone valley, Rouchier bottles their wines naturally with no sulfur added and is one of the first we have seen apply these principles to their entire production in Saint Joseph. These are very pure and juicy bottlings of Syrah in Saint Joseph, and the Luc shows incredible lushness of fruit with excellent soil expression. Rouchier has been polishing their wines, producing fresh examples and leaning away from the ultra-rustic style that their first vintages saw. We offered the 2018 early last year but were able to get some of the 2017, powerful and structured vintage that achieved good balance in the right hands. Rouchier is only imported in tiny quantities and is a producer that very few people know. It is an excellent choice for those who love this winemaking style and those that like exploring the ultra-rare and small production side of wine.
