This is an almost perfect bottle from the excellent Tuscan producer Mazzei, and this is the best vintage ever for this Chianti Cru. The Seipi Cru has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435 and continues to be a flagship vineyard for the estate. A vineyard where Merlot was planted in the 80s as a variety that would complement Sangiovese and today makes up 50% of the blend. The vines here are pushing 40 years old in some parts of the vineyard planted on Alberese, which is compact clay and limestone native to Chianti, bringing the excellent aging potential to this wine and near a near-perfect balance between power, elegance, and complexity. The Merlot was picked about three weeks before, on September 18th, followed by the Sangiovese harvested on October 1st. The two varietals were fermented separately with a 14-day maceration for the Merlot and an 18-day one for the Sangiovese. The wine was aged in 70% new French Oak for 18 months with the Merlot in Barriques and the Sangiovese in Tonneaux prior to assembling in a concrete tank with a rest period of 4 months before bottling in June of 2021. The 2019 Siepi has just been released, soaring to the top of the list for the best Super Tuscans of the vintage, and is the best young version of this cru of ever and will prove to be a force with time.
Antonio Galloni 99 points! "The 2019 Siepi continues a trend towards greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out.
