1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon

$49.99
1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon
We have had many incredible experiences with back-vintage bottles from Moulin Touahcais, an excellent source for older Loire wines. Moulin Touchais is an iconic producer in the Loire Valley, making very serious Chenin Blanc from one of the region’s most noble appellations as one of the oldest producers in Anjou. This is a traditional address that focuses on old methods developed over their 200+ years of history to make sweet wines intended to be laid down and aged for decades. They are one of the few Domaines in France that continue to offer older wines that are 30 to 40 years old and are released ex-cellar in tranches over many years. These bottles are also coming ex-cellar, coming directly from the Domaine.
The grapes are picked in several passes, blending both bone dry and sweeter grapes that give a beautifully balanced and energetic expression with the complexities and subtle sweetness of a moelleux-level wine. We were able to get just a few cases of 1982 and 1985, which are both fantastic examples and great buys for those looking for something with age without a big price tag. These are both at peak enjoyment and will continue to develop for at least another decade. Great anniversary or birthday bottle, it is rare to get a wine with this much age under $50 that is worth drinking. These are spectacular examples from Moulin Touchais at this pricing and are highly recommended.

Vinous (Rebbecca Gibbs MW) 94 points! "Hailing from a warm vintage that was one of the best in what would otherwise have been a fairly ordinary decade, the 1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon is starting to take on a deep golden appearance, commencing to amber. It offers a gorgeous, suave texture and a very complex nose that's a touch oxidative but that adds a layer of additional intrigue: it's all nuts, raisins, walnuts, olives, warm pastry, cinnamon, cooked orange peel. It's round and sweet (95g/L) but not unctuous with richness on the mid-palate while retaining enough acidity to refresh the mouth on the long finish. A wine that is very comfortable in its own skin, providing a very relaxing experience. (Drink between 2021-2035)"

John Gilman 92 points! "The 1985 vintage of Moulin Touchais has now reached its honeyed apogee of peak maturity and is drinking very well indeed. The bouquet delivers a fine blend of orange, quince paste, a touch of citrus peel, new leather, tea leaves and salty soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with tertiary layers of complexity, good acids and fine length and grip on the focused and classy finish. Not a blockbuster year for Moulin Touchais, the 1985 has aged very gracefully and is now at its peak."
