We have been friends with the Gaunoux family for over ten years, and we have another rare find directly from their cellars. Our favorite Pommard producer, responsible for creating some of the most classic and age-worthy wines in the Cote de Beaune. Having tasted back to the 50s, we have more experience with their wines than anyone else, and we can honestly say that these are wines of class, tradition, and place. They can be a little assertive when young, but these are made and meant to be cellared for 20 years or more. The Crus are virtually indestructible, and even in weaker vintages, there is a firm consistency that is innate in almost every bottle. The 2005s from Gaunoux are incredible. It was a vintage that needed plenty of time in the cellar before one could even consider opening but are finally starting to blossom out of its youthful austerity and will continue to develop for decades if desired. These are some of the only bottles available globally and is an excellent buy for classic back vintage Burgundy, don't miss it!
John Gilman 96+ points! "In the brilliant and very structured vintage of 2005, it is not surprising that Domaine Michel Gaunoux has produced several masterpieces. The 2005 Grands Épenots is a magical young bottle of Pommard that seems likely to easily live a hundred years. The bouquet is very, very deep and currently very closed, as it reluctantly offers up a stunning mélange of cherries, blood orange, smoke, gamebirds, a great base of complex soil tones, an exotic touch of mint, orange zest and mustard seed in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid right to the sappy core, with beautifully tangy acids, ripe, substantial tannins and absolutely brilliant length and grip on the still very primary finish. This will take many more years to fully blossom and reach its zenith, and should prove to be one on the longest-lived wines of this magical and very long-lived vintage."
