A new release from Pierre de Crillon, we offered a few other vintages of this cuvee from '05 and '09 with great success, and the 2010 is another fantastic ex-cellar bottler released ex-cellar directly from Pierre de Crillon in pristine condition. A friend of ours in France turned us on to these wines, saying they were great textbook Burgundies at excellent prices, and he was right, especially when it comes to the value in Gevrey, and Fonteny is one of the best examples here.
The 2010 Fonteny is a favorite Gevrey premier cru sourced from a compact ~3.7 ha slope just below the grand crus near Ruchottes, on stony limestone that gives lifted red fruit, floral spice, and excellent minerality. The 2010 is an excellent, more classic vintage, lifted red cherry and cranberry, violet, subtle spice, and cool earth over a fine, chalk-lined frame, with energy and transparency thanks to some great winemaking. It's a smart buy for premier cru Gevrey, and having rested undisturbed in the domaine's cellars until now (in perfect condition) makes it all the better. This is a rare chance to experience mature and perfectly aged Burgundy from a great vintage and one of the region's finest appellations at fantastic pricing!
