We have a back vintage of this Clos des Ducs from d'Angerville, which is one of the best estates in Volnay. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, established in the early 19th century, has long been renowned for its dedication to traditional winemaking, emphasizing minimal intervention to make very terroir-focused wines. The Clos des Ducs vineyard is one of the best wines made here from one of the best sites in Volnay. It comes from an exceptional 2-hectare vineyard in the northern sector of Volnay, with a portion of vines planted in the 50s. While 2011 was a challenging vintage for vignerons due to weather conditions causing a small crop, the fruit that remained made for some very elegant and pretty wines, and the Clos des Ducs is a great example. These bottles are in perfect condition, were purchased on release, and have been stored properly. These are showing well now, but the structure to last a decade or more in the cellar.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 93 points! "The 2011 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is showing extremely well. It is not the deepest in color and the bouquet demands some encouragement, but gradually reveals enticing smoke-infused red fruit, Earl Grey and earthy scents. Conservative and classic in style but very compelling. The palate is medium-bodied with an appealing, fleshy opening. There is a lovely suppleness to this Clos des Ducs with a persistent and seamless finish that flirts with ferrous-like notes on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Tasted at the annual Marquis d'Angerville tasting in London."
Burghound 91 points! "Light ruby color. A relatively restrained nose offers up notes of various red berries, floral and soft spice wisps. The sleek, intense and well-detailed flavors possess ample amounts of the hallmark minerality before culminating in a lingering and still noticeably firm finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is exceptionally pretty and the 2011 Ducster is almost delicate; moreover it is already drinking quite well though I would still be inclined to allow it a few more years first. (Drink starting 2025)"
