One of the most ambitious and iconic wines on the Sicily and once again at such a good rate. Winemaker Salvatore Geraci’s goal since taking over his family's estate was being able to pour his wines side by side with glasses of La Tache (as we mentioned before, this is part of a great anecdote in Robert Camuto's great travel book A Sicilian Wine Odyssey). In 1990 Gerarci took over the family property that has extremely steep Nerello Mascalese vines perched above the Straight of Messina on the very north-eastern tip of the island. His wines are powerful, yet so beautifully elegant and very much inspired by great Red Burgundy. We’ve brought the wines in for several years now and the quality is exceptional. Wines that really compete with the best elegant and aromatic examples of Burgundy and Piedmont. Occasionally we can find very special pricing and today is one of those times getting our number way down. We don’t really follow the Wine Enthusiast but Kerin O’Keefe is a smart taster and released a new review on this one yesterday, Monica Larner also has chimed in with some nice praise.
Wine Enthusiast 96 points! Intensely fragrant, this has aromas of underbrush, Mediterranean scrub, woodland berry, carob and exotic incense. The palate is all about elegance and energy, delivering red currant, pomegranate, orange zest, star anise and French oak alongside polished fine-grained tannins before a saline close. It's already tempting but hold to let it fully integrate and develop even more complexity. Drink through 2033. Kerin O’Keefe Date Published 3/1/2020
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 94 points! Salvatore Geraci is a towering figure in one of Italy's lesser-known appellations. Faro represents the northern tip of the triangular island of Sicily, near Messina. The 2013 Faro Palari is a dark and savory wine with black fruit, smoke, tar and camphor ash. This vintage shows surprising and delightful intensity. The finish is dry and structured with tannins that remain firmly knit for now. These will loosen with more bottle-aging time. I love the authentic character you get here. The crazy blend of grapes used here is Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera in the leading roles. Smaller parts of Acitana, Galatena, Jacché and Core 'e Palumba grapes are also thrown into the blend. Some 16,000 bottles were made.
