2014 Domaine Vincent and Sophie Morey Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps Eta W/O 6-23-2026
We opened a bottle of this over the weekend among almost 10 other Pinots that were two to three times the price, and this was one of the best of the group. At over a decade of age, this is a beautiful bottle that is in the perfect spot to enjoy now, from a vineyard that Sophie and Vincent do very well with, located lower on the slope and offering a bit more fruit and less austerity than the crus higher up the hill. This has long been one of the best-underrated values for premier cru red burgundy, and is a focused, classically styled Pinot Noir sourced from a small parcel of older vines planted on stony clay-limestone soils just above the village, naturally delivering lovely fruit and mineral drive. Hand-picked fruit is mostly destemmed and given a short cold soak before a gentle fermentation with native yeasts, then aged about 12 to 15 months in French oak with a restrained share of new barrels to focus on terroir. There are some great wines to be had this vintage if you know where to look, and this is a perfect example with bright red fruits, violets, blood orange, and iron minerality. The palate has good concentration for the vintage, echoing the red fruits from the nose with good focus and mid-weight, while remaining very light on its feet, with energetic acids, and finishing on minerals and fruits. It's an incredible value for the category at this price, and we have a few cases available in stock!

Burghound 90 points! "Once again there is a very mild hint of reduction but not enough to completely mask the otherwise layered and earthy dark pinot fruit aromas. There is good verve to the soil and mineral-inflected and relatively refined, delicious and detailed medium-bodied flavors that also possess a firm, mildly austere and saline-infused finish where there is only a hint of rusticity. (Drink starting 2021)"
