2016 Château Péby Faugères Eta W/O 12-20-2021

$169.99
2016 Château Péby Faugères Eta W/O 12-20-2021
A marvelous wine from a Small Chateau in St. Emillion, Chateau Peby Faugeres only has 7.5 hectares of vines which are located on a single hillside. Purchased by Silvio Denz in the late 90s from Pierre-Bernard Guisez, whose nickname was Peby, Silvio Changed the name from Chateau Faugeres to Chateau Peby Faugeres. Silvio rolled out his first vintage in 2000, which was a breakout success receiving acclaim immediately, and was given the title "Legend of the Future," also being recognized as Grand Cru Classe in 2012. The wines of Chateau Peby Faugeres are 100% Merlot. As mentioned, grapes are sourced from a single hillside amphitheater vineyard with southeast exposure and a nearby river that provides a unique micro-climate that is the basis for this great Bordeaux. This hillside has an identical composition to the hills of Southern St. Emillion, featuring ancient clay-limestone soil. Though it wasn't certified at the time, the vineyard was in transition to gain certification for organic agriculture, which was fully completed in 2020. While the current release is 2020, we were able to score some back vintage bottles of the magnificent 2016 vintage at low pricing, which are starting to show well now after some extra cellar time. The 2016 Chateau Peby Faugeres is exceptional and an excellent choice for those looking for something off the beaten path while reaching top Chateau quality.

Jeb Dunnuck 98 points! "This estate produced a blockbuster in the vintage, and the 2016 Château Péby Faugères, based on 100% Merlot aged in 65% new oak, plays with the best of the best. Coming from the oldest vines on the estate and from a southeast facing slop of unique brown limestone soils, this puppy sports a saturated purple color as well as straight-up sexy notes of sweet red and black fruits, dried earth, graphite, tobacco leaf, and hints of chocolate. Deep, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, with a seamless, layered texture, it’s another brilliant vintage for this cuvée. It will be drinkable in just 3-4 years and keep for two decades or more."

James Suckling 97-98 points! "This has an incredible finish to it and shows such energy and intensity. Full-bodied yet vivid and energetic. Chewy tannins. Goes on for minutes. Merlot magic."

Wine Advocate 96 points! "The 2016 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak barriques) has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. Wow—it slides sensuously out of the glass with scents of candied violets, Chinese five spice and chocolate box over a core of baked plums, black cherry compote and warm black raspberries plus wafts of new leather and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is decadently spicy, with bags of black fruit preserves framed by plush tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift."
