With a rich history spanning generations, this winery embodies the essence of Italian winemaking traditions while embracing modern techniques. Located in the enchanting hills of Greve in Chianti, Vecchie Terre di Montefili boasts breathtaking views of vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see. The winery's commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices is evident just by looking at how healthy the fruit is, with some plots dating back to 1975.
At Vecchie Terre di Montefili, meticulous attention to detail is the cornerstone of their winemaking philosophy. The vineyard's skilled and passionate team, led by winemaker and agronomist Serena Gusmeri, works tirelessly to cultivate the finest Sangiovese and other indigenous grape varieties, carefully handpicking each grape at optimal ripeness. Serena is devoted to minimal intervention, sustainability, and vintage-specific choices, coupled with her holistic decisions in the vineyard make for some incredible and unique wines. The aging process occurs in their ancient cellars, where the Chiantis are aged in traditional casks for 22 months.
The Gran Selezione is this estate's top Chianti Classico and is sourced from 100% Sangiovese from vines planted in the 90s on Galestro and alberese soils at a little over 1,600 feet of elevation. Structured, balanced, and fresh, with incredible presence and purity of fruit and beguiling complexity of spice and earth, this is a tremendous bottle for the money and one of the wines of the vintage for Chianti Classico. We have a limited amount at this low pricing, and this comes highly recommended.
Antonio Galloni 96 pts! "The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is positively stellar. Cedar, rose petal, pipe tobacco, anise, blood orange and new leather give the 2017 striking aromatic presence to balance the natural richness of the year. Statuesque and resonant in the glass, the Gran Selezione is a real standout - a true winner. (Drink between 2025 - 2042)"
