We know we have had a lot of Italian offers today, but we have one more late in the day gem from a fantastic Tuscan producer, Bibi Graetz. We tasted these wines a few months back, which was our first experience with Graetz. Still, it was enough to give us a glimpse of what Bibi is after. Bibi is and was a painter, designing all of the labels himself, but it's the artistry that goes into this Super Tuscan that is the most mesmerizing aspect. The Testamatta is the estate's flagship wine, a 100% old vine Sangiovese blend that flawlessly combines the varietal's fresh and fruity character with elegance, precision, structure, and incredible length. This is a serious Super Tuscan that doesn't need any gimmicks to stand out. 2018 Testamatta is a classy wine, capturing the balance and elegance of the vintage and landing in one of the top spots ever. Not an address that is as widely known, but Bibi competes with the region's top bottles and at a fair price compared to his peers. An excellent Super Tucan worthy of checking out.
Decanter (Jane Anson) 100 points! "Finely textured, with a nuanced perfume that fills the glass and takes you to the intense underbrush of Tuscany. Succulent and yet savoury, this has a lilting freshness that is overlaid with ripe berry fruits, sage and white pepper spice, and clear minerality in terms of its scraping texture that makes your mouth water on the finish. Feels light and sculpted and yet has an intensity that skewers you to the spot. This is a great wine, with scope and imagination that doesn't want to let you go. Genuinely stands out among the wines of this tasting, and these are a fine array of wines. As with Colore, Bibi Graetz selects only old vines, the youngest 50 years old from five different vineyard sites across Tuscany, all farmed organically. Fermentations in open 225l barrels with natural yeasts and manual punch downs."
