We were able to source some of the fantastic 2018 Clos Guillot from Baudry, who is well into the 2019 release. For years this has been a go-to address for Cab Franc from the Loire. Baudry's work with some of the best organic vineyards in the area produces exceptional, reasonably priced wines. With diverse holdings, each Cuvee comes from different soil structures and exposures. All vineyards are harvested by hand and vinified separately, using natural yeasts for fermentation and a non-interventionalist approach. These are some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc, and the 2018 Clos Guillot is one of the greatest of all time from Baudry. The Clos Guillot comes from a mid-slope parcel of Cabernet Franc planted on yellow limestone between 1993 and 2000 and is a very energetic and juicy wine that takes on a lot of Pinot Noir characteristics from the Limestone soil. Fresh cherries and black fruit with unraveling spices, wild herbs, an incredibly long mineral finish. This wine is a bit of an enigma because it is very approachable in its youth but can age for a decade, making it an enjoyable wine to experiment with, and it's an incredible value.
Vinous (Rebecca Gibb) 97 points! "The 2018 Chinon Clos Guillot is a rich, focused powerhouse that's firm and direct, with dark blackberries and smoky notes. If we lived in an ideal world, this would be aged before releasing, as it's ripe yet tight and tannic, with the limestone soils providing grip along the sides of the mouth and a sense of direction. Lengthy, serious and complex, leaving the mouth full of dark berry fruit, spice and tea leaves. A baby."
