2018 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg

$49.99
2018 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg
Located a the top of the hill near the Grand Cru, Hengst is found on the southern slope; here the soils are limestone and marl. This site was forgotten but was revitalized after Alsacian wines came back into favor in the 50s and 60s. Due to the high amount of iron in the vineyard, the soils are noticeably red and is the source of the name Rottenberg or red hill. The vines here are higher in elevation at 300m and are also very slow to ripen and are harvested later in the year. The soil lacks nutrients, naturally limiting the yields of the vines and producing remarkably concentrated and complex wines with fantastic precision. 2018 was a lovely vintage for Alsace, with the Pinot Gris being the highlight of the year. One of the best vintages ever for Rotenberg, where wines are ever enticing and layered examples of Alsatian winemaking.

Antonio Galloni 94 points! "The 2018 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is bright and taut in the glass, with striking dimension and tons of complexity. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and lightly honeyed notes offer a striking interplay of richness and freshness. More than anything else, the Rotenberg is marked by a feeling of structure and drive, with underlying veins of saline intensity that bring tension to the finish."
