2019 Christophe Billon Cote-Rotie Cote Rozier
A family estate founded in 1991, Christophe Billon, while not that old of an address, his family has been in the area for generations. Billon worked partially at Guigal before fully dedicating himself to the family Domaine, making three cuvees from his 25 hectares old family vines. The oldest is his vines in Rozier, located in Cote Brune, totaling three parcels, one of which was planted by his grandfather in 1942. Rozier is located right next to the famed vineyard La Landonne sharing the same east-facing hillside with classic schist soils. Vines here are 100% Syrah tended sustainably and hand-harvested with a portion destemmed depending on the vintage, usually around 70%. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel before transferring to 50% new 300-liter oak casks to age for 26 months. Cote Rozier is a serious Cote Rotie with incredible depth, showing expressive dark fruits, savory notes, and terroir purity. Billon is also on the small list of producers that have received John Livingstone-Learmonth's "Soil to Glass Transfer" award in multiple vintages, with 2019 being one of the best here of all time. A nice note below from Decanter from a blind tasting, and is one of the top Cote-Rotie's of the vintage giving producers like Ogier and Roistang a run for their money. Not a producer that makes it to the US in quantity, we have the only bottles of 2019 Cote Rozier available.

Decanter 95 points! (Blind tasted by Matt Walls) "A touch of soy, and some rooty bitters on the nose. A full-bodied, lush and generous palate with tangy acidity. Strongly rooted tannins weave through the wine. It's powerful, very ripe but not overly sweet, and the oak regime is measured. Long finish, with damson and sloe. A dark, brooding style of Côte-Rôtie that will repay some cellaring. Don't drink it young. 45-year-old vines on average (some up to 80 years old), 30% whole bunch, fermented in stainless steel. Matured in 300l French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, for 26 months. 2,200 bottles made."
