A rare find from Saint-Joseph Rouchier is one of the smallest productions we have ever seen in the Rhone. The Domaine's total vineyard area is only 1.5 hectares, worked solely by husband and wife team Christian and Martine. Located in the Heart of Saint Joseph, Rouchier produces only a few cuvees. We have their top wine, La Chave, which makes up 1 entire hectare of their 1.5 hectare total with vines planted 1958 with western exposure on granitic gneiss. The vineyards are organic and biodynamic, and like a handful of producers in the Rhone valley, Rouchier bottles their wines naturally with no sulfur added. They are one of the only Domaines to apply these principles to their entire production in Saint Joseph, made possible due to their size.
La Chave is a very pure and expressive bottle of Syrah and is the most serious of the Cuvees, with a complex interplay of fruit, savory notes, and minerality. Rouchier has been polishing their wines, producing fresher examples, and leaning away from the ultra-rustic style that their first vintages saw, with 2019 being one of their best efforts yet showing excellent power and balance. The wines of Rouchier are only imported in tiny quantities and arent widely known though they are doing incredible things with their modest holdings. It is a perfect choice for those who love the biodynamic winemaking style and like exploring the ultra-rare and small production side of wine, giving wines like Gonon a run for their money. We have a limited number of the only 2019s available in the USA right now.
Decanter 94 points! "A gorgeous, rose-scented expression of St-Joseph. Remarkably light-bodied for a 2019 and noticeably fresh, with well-balanced acidity. No great length of fruit, but there’s a slim, tapered finish, with grippy, fine tannins to the end, felt on the tip of the tongue. Surprisingly Cote-Rôtie-like. Not hugely complex or deep, but such a beautifully authentic expression, it brings a special kind of joy and satisfaction. Drinks well cold, too."
