2019 Maurice Écard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières

2019 Maurice Écard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières is a classical, terroir-driven red from a historic Savigny address, offering serious Côte de Beaune pedigree at a great price. We loved the wines from Ecard, having tasted at the domaine multiple times. Les Serpentières sits mid-slope on very stony limestone with red clay, offering great south-east exposure that yields lifted red fruit, fine spice, and excellent minerality. The domaine's parcels include mature vines in the 40- to 70-year range, which are hand-harvested and strictly sorted. The wine is mostly destemmed, fermented in traditional vats with gentle cap work, and then aged for about 12 to 14 months in French oak, with a restrained share of new barrels to preserve purity. The 2019 season yielded small berries and excellent ripeness with fresh acidity, so expect flavors of red and black cherries, raspberries, rose, subtle pepper and cedar, chalky tannins, and a long, sapid finish. The wines from Savigny age very well, and this one can be enjoyed now, but it can also be cellared for a decade. It's a rare find at pricing we rarely see in Burgundy these days from a great, under-the-radar producer that we've followed for many years and is highly recommended!
