We have a selection of the newly released 2020s from Cote-Rotie's favorite Bernard Levet, the two cru bottlings, which are fantastic examples of single-site Cote-Rotie.
Levet only has about 3.5 hectares of vines, which is extremely small but with holdings in some revered vineyards throughout Cote-Rotie. Levet only makes three wines, but from these excellent sites, each previously passed down and dialed in over the generations. Currently, the estate is in the hands of Bernard's daughter Agnes as she continues the legacy of this tiny Domaine.
Les Journaries comes from a specific parcel planted within the La Landonne lieu-dits and is sold in Europe under the name Maestria while the Chavaroche comes exclusively from the Chavaroche vineyard, which is located in the Cote Brune and sold as La Peroline to the European market. Two incredible wines from Levet finished in older oak, and because they are coming from Europe, they take the European name on the label and will show La Peroline and Maestria on the bottle.
We have the only bottles of 2020 available in the USA with no price increase over the previous vintage. These are some of the best buys for Cote-Rotie, and is one of the few producers in the region still offering incredibly made wines at reasonable pricing.
Jeb Dunnuck 94-96 pts! The 2020 Côte Rôtie Les Journaries comes mostly from the Landonne lieu-dit (there’s a small part from Côte Rozier and Côte Blonde) and is not destemmed and is brought up in barrel. The estate looks for a touch more fruit and texture in this cuvée, and the 2020 will unquestionably be an outstanding wine. Rich, candied violets, crushed stone, espresso, and dark fruits all make an appearance, and it’s medium to full-bodied and structured. I’d be a buyer.
