We've always considered Bitouzet-Prieur a timeless example of Burgundy in both colors, and the 2022 Taillpieds is a fantastic showing of the vineyard on par with D'Angerville this vintage at about 40% less. The wines here are classic but not rustic, age-worthy but not excruciatingly tannic. They are subtle, understated, terroir-driven versions of Volnay that are available for less than their peers. Vincent Bitouzet is a fantastic winemaker with an old-school flair. The wines always receive better notes than numbers (though this year is an exception), and the absence of critical hype has kept them a nice little secret all these years for those who like classic Burgundy. Bitouzet owns 0.72 hectares in this renowned premier cru, planted in mid-slope in 1971, 1983, and 1997. Taillpieds shows one of the most profound mineral expressions in all of Volnay and is the signature of this wine on full display in 2022. Complemented by excellent red fruits and floral notes, this is an excellent example of Taillpieds among the best from Bitouzet-Prieur, and we have low pricing today on some of the only bottles available.
Burghound 93 points! "This is also extremely pretty aromatically with its wonderfully spicy combination of poached plum, red and black cherry and floral nuances. There is excellent detail to the sleek, intense and tautly muscular flavors that possess a bit more overall size and weight while exhibiting excellent length on the balanced, chalky and youthfully austere finale. This firm effort is very much built on its almost pungent minerality, indeed the mouthfeel is like rolling a small pebble around your tongue!"
