Albino Rocca’s 2021 Barbaresco Riserva “Angelo” is the estate’s memorial cuvée for Angelo Rocca, the founder of the estate, created after his passing in 2012 and first made in 2013. However, 2021 is a special vintage because it is the first vintage of Riserva Angelo they have ever made, and it is a complete knock-out. The Riserva blends Nebbiolo from the great sites of Ronchi, Ovello, and Montersino to give a full cross-section of Barbaresco terroir. Fermentation is in a vertical Stockinger oak vat with a submerged-cap maceration of roughly 50 to 60 days, followed by long aging in large casks and additional time in bottle, so the style is unapologetically traditional, structured, and built to age. The family winery dates back to the 1950s, and today Angelo’s daughters and his son-in-law, Carlo, run the cellar, continuing the classical methods. This is a clear contender for Barbaresco of the vintage, and if you want a top-tier, cellar-worthy Barbaresco, this Riserva sits at the apex of the range and carries both pedigree and continuity. This is a rare find, and we have the only bottles of this Barbaresco in the US, and with a big note from Galloni, it is not one to miss!

 

Antonio Galloni 98 points! "The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Angelo shows all the pedigree of this great vintage in its dynamic, explosive personality and commensurate overall depth. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Orange peel, star anise, spice, menthol and licorice are all dialed up to the maximum. In most vintages, the Angelo is on the lighter side, but the 2021 is quite the powerhouse. I find its exotic personality totally beguiling. A bottle I followed over several hours just got better over time. Superb. (Drink between 2027-2041)"
