The 2021 red Burgundy vintage was a tiny crop and quite challenging. In the hands of capable wine-makers though it looks to be an exceptional and a welcome return to more classic wines. The 2021 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey Chambertin Clos Prieur is just that exceptional. Lovely aromas of red currant, red cherry pit, blood orange, red flowers, and liquid minerals. On the palate, the wine is tightly wound with tons of dry extract, lovely acidity, and lovely length. This wine will need a year or two, but everything is present and in harmony. There is no doubt this will be a great bottle and so refreshing compared to the super-ripe vintages of 2018-2020. This wine is also an incredible value for red Burgundy these days, so don't miss it!
I have been drinking the wines from Frederic Esmonin over the last twenty years, and they seem to be getting better and better every vintage. The family is extremely friendly as well, and on our last visit to the Domaine the mother brought out some fresh Gougeres that were the perfect wine-tasting pairing! t!
