2021 Phelan Farm (Rajat Parr) Savagnin & Chardonnay Eta W/O 2-24-2025

We popped a bottle of this fantastic wine from Raj Parr, and we think this is one of the best wines he has ever made. 2021 Phelan Farm Savagnin & Chardonnay, produced by Rajat Parr in the cool, maritime-influenced San Luis Obispo Coast AVA, is a 50/50 blend of organically farmed grapes Chardonnay and Savagnin. The vineyard follows a mixed farming approach rooted in high-level biodynamics, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture, avoiding tillage and synthetic inputs while relying on compost, fermented plant extracts, and ocean-derived treatments to maintain soil vitality and microbial life to get the best quality fruit possible. Fermentation occurred in neutral 500L Stockinger barrels with indigenous yeasts, followed by 12 months of aging in oak and an additional 5 months in stainless steel before bottling by hand on February 16, 2022. With only 1,740 bottles produced and no sulfur additions, fining, or filtration, the wine reflects Parr's limited, minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy. The style of this wine is straight out of master Jura winemaker John Francois Gavevat's playbook. It shows beautiful purity, excellent florals, fresh citrus, green apple, wild herbs, almonds, and a waxy texture from the Savignin, with the Chardonnay contributing to the richness, body, and more citrus confit and riper orchard fruit notes with a lovely underlying minerality. This also benefited from the vineyard's proximity to the Pacific, preserving acidity and freshness with a balanced 13% alcohol. The two varietals combine seamlessly to make one of the most fascinating domestic wines we have tried. It is the best example of this kind of blend we've tried outside of the Ganevat production, and this does it at half the price!
