A follow-up to our offer of the Taillepieds, we have another great Volnay from today from Bitouzet-Prieur. This time we are featuring the Pitures, which is just as good and comes in at slightly lower pricing. As we have mentioned before Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, is an old estate and continues to quietly produce some of Burgundy’s most traditional wines. Run today by Vincent Bitouzet, who farms 12 hectares organically, the domaine has long favored a restrained, terroir-driven style. The Volnay Pitures comes from a 0.7-hectare holding of 35- to 60-year-old vines on classic marl and limestone soils, just below the famed vineyard of Clos des Ducs. 2022 was a strong vintage in the Côte de Beaune, offering healthy yields, great ripeness, and lively acidity as the basis for the best example of Pitures ever made here. Bitouzet-Prieur vinifies traditionally with long, gentle fermentations, minimal extraction, aging in about 20-25% new oak, and no fining or filtration. The result is a serious, structured Volnay that highlights the power and elegance of Pitures, offering deep red fruit, spice, and a firm mineral backbone, and is one that has the potential to age for decades!
Burghound 93 points! " A cool and restrained nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its aromas of primarily red berry fruit along with subtle spice and floral wisps. The round, rich and powerful larger-bodied flavors are shaped by firm and slightly angular tannins on the youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. In contrast to most of the wines in the range, the Pitures is not one that will make for especially good early drinking, indeed I would say that it's a wine to buy and forget you own it for at least a decade.
