2022 Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

$134.99
2022 Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers
One of the favorite premier cru vineyards of Gevrey Chambertin Cazetiers is in an excellent location sandwiched between the excellent sites of Clos St. Jacques and Combe aux Moines. Henri Magnien, currently in their 12th generation of family ownership, is run by Charles Magnien, and he hit it out of the park this vintage with one of the best examples of Cazetiers made here ever. Since Charles came on as the lead in 2009, he has worked extensively in the vineyards to improve quality, following mainly organic practices but not outside the realm of Lutte Raisonee. Recently, he has been regulating temperatures for fermentation to be cooler, which has resulted in wines with a lot more elegance and complexity. It's why the Cazetieres this vintage are so good, and we definitely appreciate the improvement here. Many of the sites in the Domaine's possession have some serious age, and Les Cazetiers is no exception, coming from vines over 70 years old, second only to their Gevrey-Chambertin Villes Vignes, which is about 100 years old. The Cazetiers is also planted to a unique Pinot Noir clone dubbed Pinot Magnien, a mutation discovered in one of the Magnien vineyards in 1850 and has been used by the Domaine since then. Magnien holds seven parcels of Cazetiers, each on a different soil type, and when combined, gives a beautiful representation of the vineyard as a whole. This is a fantastic example of this top Gevrey Premier Cru, and it is one of the best vintage buys. Lots of great notes from the regular crew we have

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 93-95 points! "Bright mid purple. Served after Ruchottes because there is clearly a greater volume of fruit here, fills the mouth well, more on the raspberry side, with a little fresh white pepper behind, and medium plus depth. Does it quite have the grip of a great Cazetiers? Certainly it is a very good one."

Vinous (Neil Martin) 93-95 points! "The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has the ripest and most sensual of Magnien's cuvées on the nose, adorned with lush red cherry, raspberry and light fig scents. There's a soupçon of exoticism in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite fleshy in the mouth with good grip and density. There is more horsepower even when contrasted against the Ruchottes-Chambertin. Lingers wonderfully on the finish. Excellent."
