2023 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg

$39.99
2023 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg
While we don't offer the wines often, we always consider Alzinger right at the top of Austrian wines alongside the other big names - Nikolaihof, Pichler, Prager, etc. and with early reports showing how phenomenal the 2023 vintage is going to be, it's going to be a knockout year for Alzinger. The harmony, depth, and mineral character of both their Riesling is pitch perfect with amazing soil transparency, variety typicity, and everything you could want out of these wines. The weather was turbulent in 2023, with some dry and hot spells throughout the year, but the warmer vintages in Austria always draw more attention from critics, and this vintage is going to be complemented by some fantastic acidity and expression. Loibenberg is a prized site and is considered the warmed in Wachau with vines increasing nearly 700 feet of elevation from the first rows at the bottom to the top of the slope. Here, the forest and natural barriers shade some of the vines in intense heat, and cool air constantly flowing at night helps keep the grapes in balance. There are two types of soil here: heavy losses on which they plant Gruner Veltliner, giving a creamier texture, and barren and shallow soils for the Riesling, which promotes a much tighter and more focused style. Dry and mineral, but with the intensity of fruit that sparks stone-driven nuance, this has massive potential and is one of the top examples from this masterclass estate. We have excellent pricing today and are almost at half the price of previous vintages like '22 and '21. Don't miss it!
