Domaine Manciat-Poncet remains one of the great under-the-radar addresses in the Mâconnais. After how big a hit the 2022 Courtelong was for us, we were excited to offer the 2023 after tasting it this past week, and it's as good as, if not better than, the 2022! The Manciat family’s history in the region stretches back five generations, with Marie-Pierre Manciat taking over from her father Claude in 2003 and continuing the domaine’s reputation for producing serious Pouilly-Fuissé at remarkably fair prices. Courtelong is an assemblage of some of her best and oldest vines in Pouilly-Fuissé, with the majority of the fruit coming from Les Crays, which features limestone-rich soils. The wine is fermented and aged primarily in stainless steel, with roughly 15% seeing one-year-old French oak barrels, giving it just enough additional texture without masking the fruit's freshness and mineral character. We just tasted the 2023, and it captures the vintage extremely well, a little fleshier and more generous than the 2022, with ripe pear, apple, and other orchard fruits joined by ripe citrus, subtle floral notes, and a bright, limestone-driven finish. There is excellent texture throughout the middle, along with plenty of energy and freshness, making it incredibly easy to drink while retaining enough complexity and balance to keep you coming back to the glass. This is drinking beautifully right now and should be at its best over the next several years. For the money, it is easily one of the best buys in white Burgundy we have tasted in this price range and another reminder of just how much quality Manciat-Poncet delivers without the name recognition or pricing of Burgundy’s more famous addresses.
