2023 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Séchet Vieilles Vignes

$79.99
2023 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Séchet Vieilles Vignes

We have another incredible premier cru from Samuel Billaud today at this great pricing, and this time it is fantastic and one of the best wines made here. The Billaud name is easily recognized in Chablis thanks to Billaud-Simon; in fact, Samuel was the winemaker at Billaud-Simon for almost 20 years before leaving to start his own label, and his personal wines are now more impressive than those of Billaud-Simon. The experience he gained working for his family was immeasurable, and he's producing fantastic Chablis in a new facility where he is free to make wines how he wants. The wines here display an incredibly pure expression of Chablis, and Samuel, over the past decade, has carved out a notable spot among the top addresses of Chablis, although production remains small. These wines are still relatively under the radar and rare in the US, but as we suspected, they are gaining traction, with 2023 being an outstanding vintage here. The Sechets is a sleeper in the lineup and comes from the oldest parcel that Samuel has, planted by his grandmother in the 1930s before WWII. As many know, it's rare to have vines this old in France due to the extensive fighting that occurred during the war. These old vines naturally produce low yields, delivering a beautiful old-vine sap and concentration to the wine. It's a serious bottle of Chablis that shows Samuel is still at the top of his game and comes highly recommended!

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 92-95 points! " Planted by Samuel’s grandmother in the 1930s, yielding 40/45 hl/ha in 2023, the Séchets will be kept on lees in stainless steel for a full 18 months. Marvellous intensity right across the palate, once again a truly brilliant wine from Samuel. Beautifully dry finish to a wine that is so full of fruit."
