2024 Viña Zorzal Señora de las Alturas Garnacha Navarra is a fantastic example of why old-vine Garnacha from Navarra has become one of Spain’s most exciting value categories. Viña Zorzal was founded in 1989 by Antonio Sanz and is now run by the next generation of the Sanz family, who have focused heavily on recovering and highlighting Navarra’s old Garnacha vineyards. Señora de las Alturas comes from the Pontigos parcel in Fitero, near the Alhama River, with pre-phylloxera Garnacha vines often cited as up to 140 years old, giving the wine rare old-vine depth and naturally low yields. The 2024 vintage in Navarra was lower-yielding and shaped by spring and late-summer rains, but the region reported very good grape maturity and freshness, which suits this style well. This is not heavy, jammy Garnacha; it is high-toned, mineral, and lively, with red fruit, spice, floral lift, earthy nuance, and a stony finish that gives Châteauneuf-du-Pape a run for its money. At this price, it's a fantastic buy for ancient-vine Garnacha, real single-site character, and the freshness and energy that make Navarra one of the most interesting places to look for serious Spanish reds right now, while rubbing shoulders with some of the best examples of CDP. It's a brilliant wine worth taking a flier on, and we have the only bottles of this one currently in the US!
Vinous 98 points! "From the Pontigos vineyard in Fitero, Navarra, the 2024 Garnacha Tinta Señora de las Alturas is expressive and layered on the nose: pomegranate and violet gradually reveal blood orange, rose petals and a faint reductive note that adds complexity. The palate shows a light ripeness but remains agile and tightly shaped, finishing with a gentle grip. Precise and vibrant in flavor, this is a serious Garnacha defined by clarity and aromatic lift."
